About This Item

Durban (South Africa): Robinson & Co., 1910. Book. Good. Hardcover. Second Edition. Early C20th binding in pale brown binder's cloth, leather title label on spine. Spine knocked at top of label, a little light foxing, armorial bookplate of Herbert John Gladstone on front pastedown, good. Herbert Gladstone was the youngest son of Prime Minister William Gladstone, and a politician in his own right. After an unsuccessful stint as Home Secretary he was made Governor-General of the Union of South Africa, and presumably during this period acquired this book for his collection. The book contains 8 stories set in South Africa: a brief review of the first edition (from the Transvaal Leader) states "Jan of the Thirstland is one of the fascinating and most genuinely South African volumes of short stories yet published."..
