Book condition: Good. Covers scuffed and soiled, but binding is tight. Pages are foxed and occasionally dog-eared. Bookbinder's label on front paste-down and former owner's name written faintly on the front free endsheet. Instructions to bookbinder on title page. Rear free endsheet has been torn out. All standard bibliographic references state the 1st edition of this book was 1836, however, the imprint has the publication date as 1835. The serialization of this book in the U.S. was commenced in 1835, but not complete until 1836. Nonetheless, the publisher retained the earlier date. The title of this novel is briefly alluded to in James Joyce's Ulysses as a reference to a question of uncertain parentage..
