About This Item
New York.: Manz Corporation.. circa1950.. Colour poster, 91.5 x 59.4 cms (sheet), folding to a full colour advertising brochure 32 x 23.5 cms, text in panels and three further illustrations, light wear at folds; small fold split at the base (no loss), overall in very good, clean condition. Vivid poster art featuring a Javanese dancer, the exotic centrepiece of a 1950s advertising brochure for letterpress and offset printing. The artist, Simon Vanderlaan (1904- 1986) began his career in Chicago creating theatre posters before moving to Los Angeles in the 1930s. He memorably illustrated the cover of the 1939 Official Guidebook to the Golden Gate international Exposition and a propaganda poster (now sought-after) for Douglas aircraft in the 1940s. The verso of the brochure "It's a Colorful Old World", includes costumed images for China, Holland, and Bavaria also by Vanderlaan: alluring images for the traveller in prosperous post-war America.
The Manz Corporation was founded in Chicago in the 1860s as a wood-engraving business. They oversaw the rapid change in commercial printing, finally closing their doors in the 1960s. .
