(B&W photographs, facsimiles, ads) The cover story pays tribute to Stan Kenton, who died in August 1979, and includes reminiscences from a number of his contemporaries, including Art Pepper and Dave Dexter, plus an analysis of "The Kenton Sound," as exemplified by his orchestra's theme, "Artistry in Rhythm." Also in this issue: "Jazz Surviving Record Slump," an article about how jazz record sales had not been hit as hard by "the record industry's recent troubles" as pop records; "Insight: Birth of Cool Tuba," an interview with innovative jazzman Bill Barber; "Bringing Jazz to China," an interview with Dave Bailey about a series of lecture-demonstrations on jazz history that he had recently presented in China. The "Books" section includes reviews of memoirs by Dizzy Gillespie and Art Pepper. The "First Take" feature spotlights the thoughts of bassist Milt Hinton. .
