Paris: Librairie De Joel Cherbuliez, 1869. Jean Calas was a Protestant merchant who was tried, tortured, and executed for the supposed murder of his son in 1762. Voltaire campaigned to exonerate Calas, and was successful in 1764; unfortunately, two years after his demise. This is a Near Fine copy of the Second Edition [stated] that incorporates new material, in a Fine Binding by Hersant. Marbled paper-covered boards with black leather tips and spine.The spine is titled and heavily decorated in gilt. Clean text in French; frontis engraving; xix, 527 pages. Endpapers and all edges marbed. Minor rubbing to the corners and to the foot of the spine; inked previous-owner signature on the second free endpaper. Truly a lovely book, uncommon in such a nice binding. . Second Edition. Quarter-Bound. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
