Birmingham: Oxmoor House, 1974. First edition, number 6 of 10 specially bound presentation copies signed by 10 contributors. Oblong folio, 16x13," 165, [3]pp. 101 color and black and white facsimiles of works by Shuptrine. Publisher's mauve and purple cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, beveled edges. Marbled endpapers and doublures, g.e. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Some sumdging and soiling to boards, clean internally and nearly fine. Case with staining, most notably to rear panel. Very good.
Extravagantly bound copy of this art book which brought Tennessee artist, Hubert Shuptrine (1936-2006) national recognition. Shuptrine's images paired with Dickey's prose poetry paint a vivid and expressive picture of the heritage, traditions, people, and places of the American South.
This special copy was bound for and presented to Harry Lerner of the collotype printing company, Triton Press, in New York, who supervised the reproduction of art and manufacture for this publication. It is signed by James Dickey, binder, Henry Horowitz, and 8 others involved in the production.
