James Butler arrived in the Eastern Cape as a twenty-two-year old youth from London to recuperate from a serious illness. He stayed for two and a half years keeping a journal for his family back home. Quaker, teetotaller and later newspaper editor, he recorded in plain fashion the daily life, politics, natural history and social encounters in this remote colonial corner.
