About This Item
London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1903. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Second Edition 1903. Original dark greenish blue cloth with gilt lettering spine, original black coated EPs. Spine ends chipped, rubbed corners, small chip in first letter of spine title. Some faint small spotting covers, solid binding, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing. The book measures 203mm tall x 145mm, and has 495 pages, b/w photo frontis, index. Symonds (1840-1893) was renowned essayist, author, literature critic. Rather gloomy, he suffered from depression & poor health much of his life, but found in the Alps freshness & vitality. Though not a serious climber, he visited the Alps often, especially Davos. Includes his rambles & Alpine appreciations: several pass crossings, guided trip with Auguste Belmont, tobogganing, several minor ascents, glacier tramps, etc. About 80% of the text is in Symonds own words; Brown's goal was to make this book nearly an autobiography. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
