About This Item

Gainesville: The University Presses of Florida, 1976. 157pages. Publisher's cloth. Very good in a good dust jacket.

First edition and review copy with publisher's slip laid in. Biography of Josiah Walls (1842-1905), leading Black Reconstruction politician, a delegate to Florida's state constitutional convention of 1868, state politician, and U.S. Congressman from 1871 to 1876. "Walls was a political pragmatist who believed that whites and blacks must share power, and he worked for this ideal on the national, state, and local levels. Much of his political success can be attributed to the conciliatory stance he took toward white involvement in Reconstruction government, while at the same time quietly insisting on a major role in that government for blacks." (ANB) Walls was also active in the Colored Convention Movement and an orange farmer who later was director of the farm at Florida Normal College, now Florida A&M. University (HBCU).
