First American edition of a classic in African exploration; 8vo, pp. [v]-xxx, [31]-590; 2 steel-engraved portraits, folding map tinted in blue and with author's route in red (with short tear neatly repaired on verso), full-page map printed in blue and red, and numerous wood-engraved illustrations throughout, 20 full-page; spine ends chipped, corners and extremities rubbed, else a good, sound copy in original brown cloth lettered in gilt on spine.
