Joutel was a French soldier whose father had worked for LaSalle's family as a gardener. He became a close confidante of LaSalle, and accompanied the explorer on his third and final expedition, during which Lasalle was murdered at the hands of his own men. Joutel, who was not present at the time of the assassination, discovering the mutiny upon his return, narrowly escaped the mutinous crew, and accompanied by a small band of the six remaining loyal crew, went overland 800 leagues (about 2600 miles) from Texas to Quebec, Canada. Book provides an account of his experiences and trials, wandering around Texas and what was to become Arkansas, in search of the Mississippi River. Lacks map. Housed in sturdy wooden slipcase covered in marbled paper. [xxxiv] 386 pp. Howes J-266, Sabin 36760.
