About This Item

Albany: Weed, Parsons & Company, 1861. Hardcover. Good + condition. Begins with the Twenty Third Assembly, First Session, the eighth day of November, 1743, and includes the text of a speech by his Excellency the Hon. George Clinton, Governor. There is also a reference to the presentation of Adolph Philipse, Esq to Governor Clinton. This was a landmark series of all the legislative councils of the colony, printed in 1861, and covering the formative years of 1743 to 1775

Adolph Philipse was an Anglo-Dutch businessman, politician, slave owner and trader who was granted the Philipse Patent in the Hudson Valley, and for whom Philipstown, New York was named. The last executive council entries in this volume (March 1776) no longer take place in City Hall, but "on board the ship Dutchess of Gordon in the Harbor of the City of New York"; King George III had by this time closed the colonies to all trade and commerce.

Large and thick 4to, p819 - 2078, errata (i). Black cloth covers with gilt title at red spine label. Spine label slt chipped so that part of the word "Legislative" is effaced. Corners slt rubbed, o/w very good. Internally, very good, slt fox spotting at early pages.
