New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1871. Second Edition Reprint. Hardcover. Good. 8vo. Pp. x, 519, [10] of publisher's advertising. Illustrated with engravings in the text. "New Edition" stated, with preface dated June 1845, postscript dated Feb 1st 1860, and index. Dark red cloth, titles "Naturalist's Voyage Round the World" stamped in gilt on the spine, decorations stamped in black on the covers. Moderately shaken, spine ends chipped, covering split at the front hinge, head edge soiled, minimal foxing to preliminaries, ink gift inscription on ffep, bookplate of Lucile McDonald and bookseller tag (De Witt & Snelling Oakland Cal.) on front pastedown. Darwin's first book, which immediately established his great reputation at age 30. This is his final revision of the Journal and Remarks covering his part in the 1831-36 second survey expedition of HMS Beagle, revised in 1845 as Journal of Researches[...] and reprinted since 1902 as The Voyage of the Beagle. FREEMAN F24.

Lucile Saunders McDonald was a feature writer and book reviewer at the Seattle Times from 1942 to 1966 after achieving multiple firsts including first female news editor in Oregon, first female reporter in South America. Today she is perhaps best known as an historian.

Now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
