About This Item
"Schoolcraft and one companion named Levi Pettibone left Potosi (in the lead-mining region of southeastern Missouri) on November 6, 1818, and returned on February 9, 1819, having traveled an estimated nine hundred miles. The settlers that Schoolcraft and Pettibone encountered were just beginning to build cabins and plant crops..." (Wagner-Camp).
The map, published Jan. 15th, 1821, is entitled "Countries Bordering on the Mississippi and Missouri" and extends from Michigan Territory and the Northwest Territory in the north to northern Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana in the south, and from Ohio, western Virginia and North Carolina in the east to Missouri Territory in the west. The region west of the Mississippi includes the Arkansaw District, Lawrence District, Cape Girardeau District, Howard District, the Haywa and Haytones Wandering Grounds, and a portion of "Pike's Route Outward."
Industrialist and "Sugar King" H. O. Havemeyer, Jr., an early collector of French Impressionist art with his wife Louisine, formed the Havemeyer collection now owned by the Metropolitan Museum Art. His bookplate bears the credit of "J. W. Spenceley, Boston. 1905."
"This constituted a part of [Schoolcraft's] A View of the Lead Mines of Missouri, but was not included in that work as published" (Howes).
