Andrew Geddes Bain (1797-1864) was "road-builder, geologist, explorer, trader, soldier, writer and artist ... Utterly fearless and powerfully built, with twinkling blue eyes, he was one of the most versatile men of his day, his contributions to posterity covering many fields. An explorer who travelled far and wide, years before the Voortrekkers set out for the unknown north, he helped, through his publications, to open up the country. His humorous Kaatjie Kekkelbek is part of the national tradition, and his drawings, three of which are in the Africana museum, Johannesburg, have become treasured Africana." - DSAB I, pp. 35-38 .
