About This Item

London: Cambridge University Press & The Haklyut Society, 1955. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG-/Good. FIRST EDITION set of five octavo books bound in blue cloth with gilt spine text & a gilt image of Cook in profile on front board. All books feature burlap dust-jackets ; color of which ranges from blue to gray. Overall the books themselves are in very good (VG-) condition, with intact dust-jackets in good (G+) condition. All jacket spines feature noticeable rubbing, sunfading, and creasing, with wear, some of which approaches minor tears, across the top of most spines. Minor (~1mm) tears along base of book one, book three, book four. All jackets feature small worn square on upper right of jacket front (likely sticker of previous proprietor). Books one and two are price-clipped. No others in set are price-clipped. Most books feature sunfading along interior edge of end-flaps. Lastly, jacket of book one features water stain wrapping from base of spine around to back of jacket; hence minor light blue stains to lower portion/edge of book one's boards. Errata, fold-out sheets, addenda in all volumes are intact and in order. Pages and bindings are clean, straight, and tight; there are no marks to the text or other serious flaws beyond any enumerated above. Books included: (1) I Voyage of Endeavor; (2) II Voyage of the Resolution and Adventure (3) III Voyage of the Resolution and Discovery Part One; (4) III Voyage of the Resolution and Discovery Part Two; (5) The Life of Captain James Cook. *** N.B.—This set is four volumes spread over five books since Volume III is split across book three and book four by the publisher: hence use of 'book' not 'volume' throughout. Book five features blue topstain to textblock, and is also the only one in set published solely by The Hakluyt Society and was only ever published by such. All other books are published by Cambridge University Press for The Haklyutt Society. ***
