About This Item

This is Ambler's sixth and final novel prior to the start of World War II. Its protagonist is a British armaments engineer, about to leave Turkey, who finds himself a target by opposing international forces, trying to either kill him or protect him. Originally published in England in 1940 and later that same year by Knopf in the U.S., this book appears to be from the Knopf edition though its dustjacket carries an ISBN, a book Identification system which did not become commonly used until the 1970's. The book itself does not have an ISBN and there were later printings of the book, issued in conjunction with film adaptations, that might be morre likely sources for this book. The book is about 5 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches, 275 pages in blue-grey paper-covered boards with an blue backstrip and silver lettering on the spine. The dustjacket graphic of a male figure in hat and overcoat shifts color in mid graphic with multi-colored title at top in white, green and black. The back of the jacket contains a small b&w photo of the author with a short bio. Both book and jacket are in uncommonly good condition with no noticeable damage or flaws. Ambler is considered the writer who brought a higher level of realism to the spy thriller. . Fine. Hardcover.

Synopsis

It is 1940 and Mr Graham, a quietly-spoken engineer and arms expert, has just finished high-level talks with the Turkish government. And now somebody wants him dead. The previous night three shots were fired at him as he stepped into his hotel room, so, terrified, he escapes in secret on a passenger steamer from Istanbul. As he journeys home – alongside, among others, an entrancing French dancer, an unkempt trader, a mysterious German doctor and a small, brutal man in a crumpled suit – he enters a nightmarish world where friend and foe are indistinguishable. Graham can try to run, but he may not be able to hide for much longer...
