About This Item

New York: Viking Press, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. [4], 195 pages, [1]. Red and white cloth hardcover with title in red and white on the front cover and on the spine. Slip case present with title in red and white on all sides. Spine of the slip case is faded. Some repairs made to the slip case joints. Hardcover is in very good condition. Limited edition of 1475 copies. This copy is numbered 793. Not signed. An interesting 4 page typed letter titled "The adventure of July 16, 1935" and small piece of note paper are laid inside the book. The 4 page letter details a visit, arranged by Mrs. Erskine Caldwell, to see Erskine Caldwell in Winthrop Maine. The writer describes the visit and discussion with Caldwell. The writer states, "Caldwell was plainly shy. I had to do most of the talking or it would have been a Quaker meeting." The writer is not identified and possibly was an interviewer for some publication. The writer provides sufficient detail of the interview adding in one part on page 3; "He (Caldwell) was pleased with the dramatization of "Tobacco Road," feeling that Jack Kirkland had never intruded. The changed ending was necessary to suit the story to the theater. It was invented by Kirkland with Caldwell's approval."

The approx. 6" x 3" note paper is completely filled with content with a small tear lower corner. This note adds a bit more context to the meeting with Caldwell. The writer thanks an acquaintance, "Just a note to thank you for the list. I held in my hand as I talked with E. Caldwell for an hour -It gave me much to talk of, happily, as he is the shyest young giant I ever encountered. An amazing experience.
