[No place - New York?]: American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews, 1827. First Edition. Self-wrappers. Near fine. Octavo, pp. 130-144. Near fine in self-wrappers, with old horizontal folds, long flattened. Bright and clean, with three small library stamps to the front wrap. A very scarce Baptist pamphlet, which advocated the conversion of Jews to Christianity. The beginning of this issue discusses the testimony of a converted Jew in Amsterdam whose brother died "at peace" having converted to Christianity. Slightly more common than this periodical appears to be a rival publication, published by Solomon Jackson, entitled "The Jew," which was a direct reaction to what he saw as a threat from the publishers of "Israel's Advocate." Though known to institutions, library holdings are scarce and often incomplete. We find possible full runs at The American Antiquarian Society, Columbia, Harvard, and a single issue at Princeton. A rare and important periodical, documenting interfaith relations during the period between the Revolution and the Civil War. Not in Howes.
