This edition was specially created in 1990 for Quality Paperback Book Club. Printed in the U.S.A. Large format soft cover in very good condition with clean sharp wraps. Interior text block clean & tight; no writings, no markings noted. Size approximately 9 1/8"" tall x 7"" wide x 1"" thick; 494 pages. * From the back cover, "" 'Jude the Obscure' is, in Thomas Hardy's words, the story of ""a deadly war waged between flesh and spirit."" It tells of the short, miserable life of the promising Jude Fawley, a stonemason aspiring to the ministry, who is defeated intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally by fate, his own weakness, and his involvement in the lives of others. . . . .The novel's pervasive gloom, verging on the morbid, and its relentless critique of Victorian mores caused a sensational critical backlash so negative that Hardy announced he would never again write fiction. Today, however, 'Jude the Obscure' is considered by many to be Hardy's greatest novel.""

Synopsis

Jude the Obscure is the last of Thomas Hardy's novels, begun as a magazine serial and first published in book form in 1895. The book was burnt publicly by the William Walsham How, Bishop of Wakefield, in that same year. Its hero Jude Fawley is a working-class young man who dreams of becoming a scholar. The two other main characters are his earthy wife, Arabella, and his cousin, Sue. Themes include class, scholarship, religion, marriage, and the modernisation of thought and society.
