About This Item

New York: Avon Publishing Co., Inc., 1952. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. 189 Pages. An Avon 1952 reprint of a 1946 copyright. Minor cover edge wear and lightly turned up front corners. A tight square book with some light age-tanning to pages. There may have been a front endpaper that is missing now. At home, in the Cotton Belt of the deep South, Jule grew up to be a hunter of 'possums and 'coons and a planter's handy man. Also, he fell for comely Bertha Mae and soon induced her into illicit intimacy. But a white man made Bertha Mae his mistress-and trouble started! He fled up north to New York. And as so many thrill-starved farm boys before him, Jule did not search for the honest, sincere, church-going people of Harlem, but soon became entangled with the fast crowd and found himself in an orgiastic series of drinking, wild parties, and lecherous women who hungered for his hard caresses! The story of Jule's struggle to find himself in a Harlem crowd that seemed hell-bent for damnation is a story that possesses a deep and illuminating insight into a too-little known segment of American life! The Front Cover depicts a typical scene in Jule's apartment in Harlem, during the time that the girl, Lou, is living with him.
