Mark Twain and his works were immensely popular all on their own. Such notable characters as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stood out about other 19th-century literary characters, and not just in the United States.
"Jumping Frog" was Mark Twain's first great success as a writer and brought him national attention. It was published in 1865 as part of a small collection of short stories and was published by itself for the first time in 1903. This first American edition was published by Harper and bound in the classic red binding with a green frog on the front cover featuring impressive illustrations by Strothman.
