The First Edition have for sale this rare two book set of the classic Rudyard Kipling books, The Jungle Book (1894) and The Second Jungle Book (1895), which are in their original blue cloth with gilt illustrations to the front boards and spines. The Jungle Book stories were famously made into an animation film by Walt Disney. ____This was an ideal film for Disney to make, with each animal in the jungle having its own name, able to speak and communicate with the young boy Mowgli, and each animal having an individual character that personified the group of animals it belonged to.____The Jungle Book is a first edition, second and third impression published by Macmillan in 1894 (the same year as the first issue, being identical with the pages having all edges gilt, black endpapers, etc). The original blue boards with gilt decoration to the front of elephants being ridden, and Kaa the snake to the spine. The boards are in Very Good condition being complete and in original condition with the gilt decoration being very bright; corner knocks; knocks to the top and bottom of the spine; a crease to the spine where the book has been opened and read; slight shelf lean; and small light marks to the back board. Despite these imperfections, consistent with a book of this age, these boards are extremely attractive and desirable.____There are 212 numbered pages with jungle stories and songs; and illustrations by J.L. Kipling, W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. The pages are all edge gilt; original black endpapers to the front and back of the book; very tightly bound-in; clean and in overall Very Good condition with a name in pencil to the Half Title Page; slight spotting and age toning to the tissue guard between the frontispiece and Title Page; and occasional and light spotting to some of the pages.____This is a highly collectable and desirable first edition early issue of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.____The Rudyard Kipling sequel to accompany The Jungle Book had the apt title The Second Jungle Book. The Second Jungle Book being offered is the first edition, second issue published by Macmillan in 1895 in the same year and just one month after the first issue (December 1895).____As with the design of the boards for The Jungle Book, the original blue boards for The Second Jungle Book feature a gilt decoration of a cobra snake to the front wrapped around a dagger; and to the spine what looks to be a naked female (or is it Mowgli?) erotically wrapped in a python snake. The boards are in Very Good original condition with gilt decoration being extremely bright and with corner knocks; knocks to the top and bottom of the spine; a crease to the spine where the book has been opened and read; and slight shelf lean. Again, this is an exceptionally attractive and desirable Jungle Book binding in original condition.____There are 240 numbered pages, all edges gilt, with the original black endpapers; containing jungle stories and songs; with decorations by J. Lockwood Kipling. The pages are in Very Good condition being clean with initials in pencil to the Half Title Page and the date 1896; slight spotting to some of the pages; and cracks to some of the internal hinges which are cosmetic rather than structural with all pages firmly bound-in.____This is a stunning and very collectable first edition early issue Jungle Book two book set of what has to be one of the most famous and memorable children’s books of all time by Rudyard Kipling..
