About This Item
Clark City Press, 1991. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Near Fine. Russell Chatham. Association copy, inscribed to Gary Paul Nabhan and his second wife: "To Gary & Caroline, from Little Jimmy." Harrison has drawn his patented one-eyed self-portrait sketch below his signature (the same sketch imprinted on the cover board). Nabhan and Harrison both lived in Patagonia, Arizona (Harrison part-time) and were friends for more than twenty years. Nabhan wrote a touching remembrance of Harrison after his death, detailing their lunch a week before and some of their more surprising connections (Nabhan s cousin had been Harrison s college roommate and introduced Harrison to his wife). Nabhan writes, "Harrison was more than just another pretty face, skilled angler, hedonistic hunter, and bizarre story-teller: he had a deeply moral view of the right ways to treat the creatures of the seas, the streams the farmsteads and desert grasslands of this planet, and he minced no words when describing the ugly consequences of treating creation the wrong way." First edition hardcover that would be near fine except there s a little bowing to the boards AND someone or something chewed on the top boards a little. So good only, but the covers are otherwise clean and the pages are beautiful. A near fine jacket nicely hides the damage to the boards. Though something took a little bite out of the book, a great association copy nonetheless and very readable. Please inquire for photos.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
