About This Item
Gdansk: "Jazz" Miesiecznik Illustrowany,, 1957. Stylish promotional calendar for the long-running Polish jazz magazine Jazz: Illustrated Monthly. Musicians featured include Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Peggy Lee, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Eddie Safranski, King Oliver's Band with Lil Hardin, Leslaw Lic and Jerzy Matuszkiewicz, Katerine Valente, and Gerry Mulligan. Inevitably uncommon, pages perforated to be torn away and the materials far from durable; however, although designed to be disposable this is an attractive piece, and a reminder of the enduring popularity of jazz in Eastern Europe. Quarto. 15 leaves including front cover - featuring Rita Hayworth in front of a silhouetted hot band! - subscriptions leaf and back board, hole-punched at the top for suspension. Each month page with a portrait of a performer, monochrome in various tints, small jazzy "remarque", the artwork lifted from various sources including David Stone Martin, next to the dates, artist biography verso, Light browning, a little age-wear, small piece separated from the backboard, reattached with archival tape, overall very good.
