About This Item

Sydney: Thomas Richards, Government Printer, 1875. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Sydney, Thomas Richards, Government Printer, 1875 (second edition)/ 1866. Quarto, vi, 172 pages with 4 full-page wood-engraved botanical plates plus a lithographed portrait frontispiece ('Murri', an Indigenous man). Publisher's dark green stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, and ruled in blind on the front and rear boards; cloth a little rubbed, bumped and marked; small sealed L-shaped tear to the spine; minor wear to the cloth on the bottom edge of the rear board; a very good copy (internally excellent). Provenance: this copy was apparently in the collection of Zane Grey. Loosely inserted is a typed letter signed by one George A. Taylor, manager of Christies Auctions Limited, 196-8 Castlereagh Street, Sydney (general auctioneers, not the more famous international company). The letter, on the business letterhead, is dated 4 August 1936, and is addressed to 'Zane Grey, Esq., Hotel Australia, Castlereagh Street, Sydney'.

'I have noticed in the Sydney Press that you are interested in the Aborigines of Australia so far as their Songs, Traditions, Laws and Customs of the race. To help you in your study I would be pleased to give you [this book].... If you care to have the book let me know.

I am not offering the book with any view of publicity on my part and if accepted by you my name is to be anonymous. I simply give it to you as a recompense for the great pleasure I have received in reading your books on the American outdoor life.' Ferguson 14916.
