About This Item

New York: Henry Holt and Company,, 1956 Illustrated with photographs. First edition, second printing (published the same month as the first printing). Inscribed by Roger Maris on front free endpaper: "Good luck / Roger Maris." Publisher's green cloth, with spine stamped in red; in its original green dust jacket designed by Ben Feder, with baseball and elephant illustrations to front panel, lettered in black and red. Near fine book, with very light wear to spine ends and corners, light toning to spine ends and board edges, Global Certified Authentic sticker to front free endpaper, and a small patch of staining to fore edge of text block; very good unclipped dust jacket, with shallow chipping to head of spine, a small closed tear to head of spine reinforced with a strip of tape, a touch of chipping to top of rear panel, and minor splitting to ends of front flap fold. Overall, an excellent copy, inscribed by the MLB great. In The Kansas City Athletics, Kansas City Star sports editor Ernest Mehl tells the dramatic story of the Athletics' move from Philadelphia to Kansas City in 1954. Roger Maris played 12 seasons of Major League Baseball from 1957-1968 with 4 different teams, including two years with the Kansas City Athletics (1958-1959). Maris is best remembered for his historic 1961 season where he broke Babe Ruth's single season home run record with 61 home runs, the last of which came in the fourth inning of the last game of the season on October 1, 1961. Maris also led the New York Yankees to a World Series title that same year. Maris is a 7x All-Star, 3x World Series Champion in 1961, 1962, and 1967, 2x A.L. MVP in 1960 & 1961, and 1960 Gold Glove Winner. His number '9' was officially retired by the New York Yankees in 1984. . Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
