About This Item

1. A collection of 42 greeting cards by Karl Schrag addressed to his brother and sister-in- law, Paul and Susie Schrag. Most of the cards feature signed prints of Schrag’s in the company of inspired quotations by Cézanne, Proust, Valery and Kafka, to name a few. 2. Some two-dozen Karl Schrag solo and group exhibition announcements, invitations, and reviews. From 1945 until his death in 1995, Schrag was represented by the Kraushaar Galleries on Fifth Avenue. 3. Stack of salvaged doodles on scraps of paper, envelopes, receipts etc. Unlike his finished paintings and prints, his doodles are almost all of human figures. 4. Miscellaneous Schrag ephemera. A 1977 Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Calendar with a brightly colored vegetal scene by Schrag to decorate the month of August. 5. The Story of Xenia (or the Enchanted Garden). An anonymous novella becomes a Schrag family project–with an original illustration by Karl, the postscript by his brother Paul, and the binding and box by his sister-in-law Susie.

PDF available upon request. Karl Schrag was a German-American painter and printmaker, whose work straddled European and American strands of modernism.
