About This Item

London, United Kingdom: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Limited, 1976. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 10" x 6 7/8". 170 pages, 48 black and white illustrations from contemporary photographs, 3 maps. Karluk was the leading ship of Stefansson's Artic Expedition of 1913-1918, which was crushed and sunk in ice almost before the expedition had properly begun. The ship's crew of 25 people were left stranded on on the Artic ice, while their leader continued his northern exploration, not returning for five years. Mckinlay was among the twenty-five, and survived; this book tells for the first time a true account of the nightmare struggle for survival..
