About This Item

Verlag Bruno Hessling, Berlin, first edition, 1977. Cloth, black cover title, large 4to, 31 cm,. 183 pp, 43 ills, plans. A valuable catalogue with very detailed descriptions. Includes sections on "Pattern Books and designs" and "Elevations and Views".From a bookseller's advertisement: "The 'Berlin Catalogue' has long been one of the few really indispensable reference books for whoever was interested in the earlier illustrated books on architecture, perspective, decoration, gardens, fortification, fireworks and a host of more or less related subjects. The collection the catalogue described suffered heavy losses during World War II, but has since been brought up to strength again..As a pilot venture for an eventual re-styling of the whole catalogue, Dr Fischer has re-catalogued one particular section of the library's collection: the English books on architecture and decoration, pattern books, cottage books and the like. She described about 125 titles published before about 1820, in great detail - with collations, references, notes on other editions, and a discussion of the position and relevance of the book within the framework of Its period, subject and author. The result is a monumental work, which bears little resemblance to its 'original' except in retaining the some numbering. Very Good.
