About This Item
London: W. H. Smith / Frederick Warne. Very Good/Very Good. 1979. Hard Cover. 4to 0723224129 Previous owner's inscription and name sticker on ffep.158 pages clean and tight. Catherine Greenaway, forever afterwards known as Kate, was born in Hoxton, London, on St Patrick's Day, the second daughter of John Greenaway, a prominent wood-engraver and draughtsman whose work is to be found in early volumes of the Illustrated London News and Punch. It was her father who first encouraged her to draw, an interest which increased throughout her student days at the National Art Training School in South Kensington- now the Royal College of Art - and at the Slade, where she attended evening classes. After illustrating many fairy stories, her first great triumph came when her own Under the Window, a collection of pictures and rhymes, was published in 1879 and revolutionized the children's book world. The children of her pictures and rhymes became the darlings of the English nursery, so much so that parents began to dress their own children in the Greenaway style. .
