In his mid-teen, he escapes, only to find himself cast adrift on the streets of the big city. At 20, lonely, disillusioned and in jail, Garnet receive a letter from his long-lost Native family. Released from jail, Garnet decides to stay on the reservation and in so doing discovers a sense of place of self, through Keeper, a friend of his grandfather.

Synopsis

Richard Wagamese is an Ojibway whole early life story bears some resemblance to that of his protagonist.  He is the former Native Life columnist for the Calgary Herald .  These columns won him a National Newspaper Award.
