This Kelly's Directory for Cumberland is a wonderful resource for genealogists and researchers and a fascinating guide to the county in the late Victorian age. The directory begins with a brief outline of the county, it's council, magistrates, constabulary and geology. This is followed by the alphabetical directory of it's cities, towns and villages, from Addingham to Wythop, with each location being given a physical description, and notable provate and commercial persons noted. Then comes the court directory, listing the names of notable people of the whole county, and runs from Frederick H Abbott of Henry St, Carlisle, to Emile Zullig of St Bees. And finally the trades directory, listing county businesses by industry from absorbent wool manufacturers to zinc workers. Then comes 72 pages of adverts, some national, some county. The map is present and in very good order. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age. The book has been rebound to a very high standard, with new pastedowns and endpapers, and the inner binding is very secure. There is some old water staining to the pages' top edge but this is marginal.
