'Uys Krige's even then strong gift for rhythm builds up a poem like the excellent "Weerstand" (Resistance), for example, in which he praises the palm, the olive tree, and the deep-river-like stillness of a starry night as symbols of patience and resistance in words, sounds, and movements of mind that make the reader feel their being and personality, as it were, and realize with some vividness the nature of the qualities they symbolize.
