Backstrip faded. Cover corners and ends of backstrip rubbed. Gift inscription (initials only) at head of first "Contents" page. Modern booksellers label ("Berkelouw Brothers , Sydney") on lower corner of front pastedown. Scattered minor foxing. Stowe wrote this book to offer documentary proof that cruelties and injustices portrayed in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" were representative of the horrors inflicted every day on slaves in the South, and not merely the fantastic inventions of a Northern abolitionist.
