London:: Ward Lock, 1941., 1941. Forward by Winston Churchill. 16 full-page plates, and 5 colored maps of which 4 fold. First edition. Original blue cloth, bright gilt lettering. Churchill and Birdwood served together in Natal as members of Lord Dundonald's Brigade at the time of the Relief of Ladysmith. He writes: "This is the story of an officer who carried a Field-Marshal's baton in his knapsack. We believe, on good authority, that every soldier does this. But this soldier, by dint of 40 years' hard work and devotion to his profession, through many campaigns and in positions of great responsibility, finally received his baton from the King". Original blue cloth. Heavy. Some pencil marginalia/undelining in the last 100 pages. Newspaper clipppings attached to front flyleaf Water stain to lower eged of the rear board. Text is similartly staind most of the way though. Fair Copy. 1st. Hardcover. Fair.
