The John Day Company, 1949. FIRST EDITION, no other printings listed. The familiar rust brown boards with gilt embossed design to front board and spine containing the title. Very good condition in and out. The cast of characters is immense, mostly Chinese with a scattering of Americans and Europeans. The scenes alternate between New York and China, with a glimpse of London. Beginning at the wars end in 1948, year of inflation, struggle and portent. Those people in their endless variety are in this book - all of them, villain and hero, poet and peasant, rebel and scholar, male and female. The Kinfolk who give the book its title are the family of the famous Dr. Liang. Buck's longest novel and filled with diverse characters, of post-WWII China and the extended family of Dr. Liang, some of whom experience life and work in New York City. 406 pages.
