Black full cloth with bright and sharp gilt lettering on backstrap; very clean and unmarked; tight and solid, square with sharp corners. Interior pristine. Sixteen plates on coated paper of full color medieval illustrations plus b/w illustrations throughout. Clean jacket with illustration: Arthur fights a Roman general. There is a small near closed tear on the rear upper spine edge tape reinforced; light wear along upper edge. Lightly sunned along upper edge of jacket. Richard Barber gives a clean and readable outline of the development of the medieval stories about Arthur and his court in French, German and English, and describes how the stories were received in the 19th century by the English poets and by Wagner. He pays equal attention to the works of art, both medieval and modern, inspired by Arthur. 209 pages. 9.75 x 7 inches. Dorset Press, New York, 1991.
