About This Item

London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1863. Ruskin called this a "fairy tale," and he wrote it for the twelve-year-old girl that he later married. It dates to 1841 and was first published ten years later. It became rather wildly popular. This is a Very Good copy of the Fifth English Edition. Bright orange cloth binding, ruled on the covers; gilt titling and decoration on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 64 pages; with twenty-two illustrations by Richard Doyle. Very bright and fresh text. The spine has darkened, and the orange binding shows some soiling. There is an armorial bookplate on the front paste-down. The front hinge is cracked but appears to be holding well.. Fifth Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Richard Doyle. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
