London: Cassell, 1885. First Edition, Second State. Signed, inscribed, and dated in the year of publication by the author H. Rider Haggard at the half-title: “ To Mr. Palmer from H. Rider Haggard, December, 1885”. With the folding color facsimile map fully intact, inserted as a frontispiece, and a black and white map on page 27. Some darkening to the red cloth, mostly at the spine, with a tiny bit of strengthening and with some edge wear and light handling without dust jacket. Inspired by Treasure Island, Haggard set out to write an adventure story for boys, and succeeded in creating one for adults too.
Synopsis
King Solomon's Mines (1885) is a popular novel by the Victorian adventure writer and fabulist, Sir H. Rider Haggard. It tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party. It is the first English fictional adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered the genesis of the Lost World literary genre.
