About This Item

London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1885. First American Edition. Very Good. First American edition with all errors in text present: "Bamamgwato" for "Bamangwato" on p. 10, line 14; "to let twins to live" for "to let twins live" on p. 122, line 27; and "wrod" instead of "word" on p. 307, line 29. The first edition consisted of 2,000 copies printed in Britain, where 1,500 of those were bound with ads at the rear; the remaining 500 sheets were sent to Cassell's New York office and bound in the United States without terminal ads.

In publisher's original red cloth decoratively stamped in black on upper board and spine, and spine titles in gilt; folding map at frontis. Very Good with lean to binding, wear to cloth with rubbing through and fraying to corners and spine ends. Former owner name and bookplates to preliminary pages, folding map with tears and a few creases, pages toned with an occasional corner crease, front and rear inner hinge suggest glue repairs, hinges at front free end paper and half-title page slightly exposed.
