About This Item
NY: Simon and Schuster, 1941. First Edition. Cloth. Good/fair. Octavo, 674 pages. Unstated first edition. Red cloth boards with black lettering on spine. Writing inside front cover. dust jacket sunned on spine and with chips and tears. Dust jacket encased in a clear, protective cover. This is a large or heavy book and may require additional shipping charges to mail outside of the United States. 'Kings Row' is the story of a midwestern town, told over two decades. Exposing hypocrisy and small-town secrets, the novel deals with themes of mental illness, incest, homosexuality, suicide, gender equality in relationships, and sadistic vengeance, themes rare in American literature even by 1940 when the book was written. The book was turned into a 1942 movie, which starred a young Ronald Reagan in a performance many consider to be his best. It is known for Reagan's character shouting out in horror, "Where's the rest of me?" upon discovering both his legs had been amputated.
