About This Item

Boston/New York: Lee & Shepard/Lee, Shepard, and Dillingham, 1875. Large octavo (22.5 x 18), 568 pages. Author information from the copyright page. FIRST EDITION. A collection of recipes, drawn from various sources, including French, German and English cookbooks, as well as "written receipt-books of families famous both at the North and South for their savory cooking." The compiler, Elizabeth S. Miller, hails from Geneva, New York, and dedicates the book to the "Cooking Class of the Young Ladies' Saturday Morning Club". Some stains and chipping to fore edge of first few leaves; age-toning throughout. Spine rebacked with original decorated cloth laid-down, showing some wear to the head and foot of the spine. In rubbed and soiled, black- and gilt-decorated beveled boards. Good. With a neat ownership signature to preliminary blank, "Lynn, March. Lettie J. Adams, 1877". [Bitting, page 325; not in Cagle].
