About This Item
Jessie Fothergill's classic Victorian tale of a son disinherited by his wealthy family, subsequently found working as a poor clerk. Considered a significant work in the Women's New Fiction movement; also deals with the rights of laborers and other workers.
Bound in 19th century white parchment over brown marbled boards, with elaborate gold filigree work on spine, titles in red labels, two volumes in one.
A very attractive first edition of Fothergill's popular work. She was a noted female writer of the time still read today, known for her portrayals of the industrial Midlands and rather unsavoury characters; she was also notable in the Victorian Era as an agnostic writer
