About This Item

Pierre Berton (1920-2004) was a journalist, newspaper editor, WW2 officer, Korean War correspondent, TV host, and author of 50 books. Among these are his popular, spirited accounts of the Klondike Gold Rush. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary in 1997 of the Gold Rush that began in 1897 is the Anniversary Edition of his 1983 photo essay. In a statement at the head of this special edition, Burton wrote, "This classic work, republished for the Klondike anniversary year, tells the story not only of man's search for treasure, but most importantly of man's search for himself."

This scarce collectible is in like new condition with but small signs of use on the dust jack. The 175 historical photos in their oversized format give the many well-known historical images a newness of detail, perspective, and understanding. Many lesser-known historical photographs are also part of the collection.

Four other Berton books accompany the Anniversary Edition:

Drifting Home: A Family's Voyage of Discovery Down the Wild Yukon River (Douglas & McIntyre, Toronto 1973), Pierre Berton. 174 pages, Map.

I Married the Klondike (McClelland & Stewart, 1972), Laura Beatrice Berton. Introduction by Pierre Berton, the author's son, and Preface by Robert Service. 231 pages.

Klondike Fever, The: The Life and Death of the Last Great Gold Rush (Carroll & Graf, New York 2001, Seventh Printing), Pierre Berton. 457 pages, Maps, Bibliography, Index.

Klondike: The Last Great Gold Rush, 1896-1899 (Anchor Canada, Random House 2001). 472 pages, 16 Maps, Notes, Bibliography, Index.

To the Klondike Gold Rush, Dawson City, and Yukon Territory of the latter 19th & early-to-mid 20th centuries, this collection gives comprehensive coverage with history, maps, and high-quality historical photos, many of which are greatly enlarged.
