RARE Biography: A youth of Scotch Bush, east central New York, in the 1770s, Mackenzie was the son of a lieutenant of the King's Royal Regiment and at 14, was enlisted to carry news of a rebel raid to his village. Fleeing to Montreal, Canada, his adventures were only beginning, for later the exploring the west drew him. Formed North-West Company for fur trading. He wrote of his adventures, publishing in 1801, "Voyages from Montreal on the River St. Lawrence through the continent of North America to the Frozen and Pacific Oceans in the years 1789-1793".
