Very good/very good. 504p, Octavo a very good copy with wear at the edges and lightly bumped t two corners in a very good dust jacket with a chip at the bottom of th spine and some edgewear including nicks, tiny tears and light creases. Signed on the first leaf: "Best Regards , Humphrey Bogart". Humphrey Bogart financed and starred in the hard hitting film noir adaptation by Nicholas Ray, in which he played an attoreny trying to keep a young, embittered criminal from the electric chair played by John Derek in his debut role and uttering the immortal line"Live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse." Dooley Wilson (Sam of Casablanca) also had a small role as a piano player, his only reteaming with Bogart. At his death Motley, a Chicago native whose fiction was often race-blind was considered one of the leading African-American novelists of his time. This is his first book
