About This Item

Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, 1483. This copy has a very beautiful coloring. The colors used, blue, yellow, green, parma, brown are of a deep tone. The majority of these woodcuts appeared in an edition of the Bible, in low German, given by Bartholomaeus de Unkel and Heinrich Quentell, in Cologne around 1478-79. They are attributed to the eponymous "Master of the Cologne Bibles". Anton Koberger, best known for his "best seller" of the period, the "Nuremberg Chronicle" made remarkable use of these illustrations. They were imitated in the illustrations of subsequent editions of the Bibles. Their influence can even be seen in the series of engravings of the Apocalypse by Dürer, published in 1498. Anton Koberger was the godfather of Albrecht Dürer, whose family lived in the same street. Initially a goldsmith, Koberger became a printer in 1471. He soon became the leading printer in Europe, employing up to a hundred workers, including illuminators, who most likely colored this copy. Painted paragraph marks and large initials in red and blue. Provenance: Handwritten note on folio IV: "Heinrich Sirt von Armin Siebeneichen hat mich gekauffet 1490". Endpapers of the volumes have been renewed. The spine of the first volume has been restored. Some light dampstaining in the second part of the first volume, in the margins they do not affect the texts, nor the engravings. Very fine copy.
