Kreatury "Nové Evropy": 12 politických karikatur [The creatures of the "New Europe": twelve political caricatures] by Hanuš Bohman and Dr. A. Götz-Křížanovský, preface

Original card portfolio printed in red and yellow, housing twelve leaves of plates and introductory text. Very good; only llight nicks to edges; easily the best copy we have encountered. Scarce portfolio comprising twelve large leaves of plates showing striking anti-Nazi and anti-fascist caricatures, of which five are printed in red and black, the remainder in black and white. The portfolio was apparently published just shortly after the liberation of Prague from German occupation in 1945. The artist was Hanuš Bohmann (1903-1980), a little-known painter and illustrator from Nymburk, Bohemia, which was also the birth place of Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, in whose novel "Gaps" (Proluky) Bohman makes an appearance. Among the figures mocked in these caricatures are Adolf Hitler and other leaders of Nazi Germany, such as Himmler, Göring, Goebbels, Heydrich, as well as Mussolini, the Czech collaborator and Nazi-propagandist Emanuel Moravec, and Emperor Hirohito. The front wrapper supplies a short, often humorous legend to the images, and also depicts a dead rat with a swastika on its stomach. With a one-page preface by one Dr. A. Götz-Křížanovský. Scarce, we could trace only two copies in institutional holdings worldwide. As of August 2020, KVK and OCLC only trace a single copy outside the Czech Republic, at Drew University.
