About This Item

(Pretoria: J.P. van der Walt, 1978) 0799303445. Large oblong 4to; original coarse oatmeal cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (x) + 240, incl. index; lavishly illustrated with large-format reproductions in colour and monochrome; trilingual text (Afrikaans, English, and German) in parallel columns. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and a bit foxed, sunned on spine panel. Very good condition. "A number of South-West African artists have recently become well-known. The works of Adolph Jentsch, Fritz Krampe and Otto Schroeder are represented in all the most important art galleries in South Africa and form part of many private collections. Many of their predecessors, however, either remained unknown or were forgotten after a period of short-lived fame. The works of Carl Ossmann and Axel Eriksson are known to only a handful of people outside South-West Africa. The works of H.A. Aschenborn, too, are only rarely seen today. The purpose of this study is to take a new look at the artists of South-West Africa - the known and the lesser known - and at the motifs they treat." .
